Yoshida-ya is a small grocery store beloved by locals for its authentic Hida dishes and homemade bento boxes. The supermarket changes its bentos daily to keep its meals exciting for repeat visitors. Generally, the lunches include a fried component—such as chicken or shrimp—a variety of side dishes, and freshly cooked rice. You can pick up a premade bento or customize your order with dishes available that day. Some must-try Hida side dishes are koroimo (potatoes seasoned with sugar and soy sauce) and komodofu (tofu flavored with soy sauce and dashi). The supermarket strives to use local ingredients as often as possible, so you can expect plenty of fresh produce, such as wild vegetables in spring and delicious mushrooms in autumn. You can pick up the bentos upon entering or, if you are confident in your Japanese, can reserve them ahead of time over the phone.
Aside from its bentos, Yoshida-ya also crafts handmade onigiri (Japanese rice balls) daily. Salmon and kombu kelp onigiri are the supermarket’s top sellers; however, we also recommend that you try the negi miso variety, which is a Hida speciality. Negi miso is a sweet and savory paste that mainly consists of miso and green onion.
Both the bentos and onigiri are inexpensive and easy meals to grab on the go. Since Yoshida-ya is close to the Seto Canal and Araki River, we suggest enjoying your meal by these scenic landmarks. You are guaranteed to taste the flavors of Hida in every bite.
